Meet Mrs. Nnenna Esther Adeleke (née Akpara), an Igbo woman from Akwete in Abia State whose family story is one of the most remarkable blends of Igbo and Yoruba heritage in Nigeria.
Nnenna was married to Ayoola Adeleke, a prominent man from Ede, Osun State. Together, they raised children who would go on to leave a major mark in politics, business and entertainment.
Her son, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, became the first civilian governor of Osun State.
Years later, another of her sons, Senator Ademola Adeleke, would also become governor of the same state — making their family’s political history particularly remarkable.
Then there is Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, businessman, billionaire and founder of Adeleke University. He is also the father of Nigerian music superstar Davido.
Think about that for a moment…
One woman gave birth to a family that would produce two governors of the same state at different times, a highly successful businessman, and one of Africa’s biggest music stars as a grandson.
And there is another beautiful part of her story.
Through Nnenna, the Adeleke family carries both Igbo and Yoruba heritage — a reminder of how marriage can bring cultures, histories and generations together.
She may not have been the household name that her children and grandson became, but her influence lives on through the family she helped build.
Some women enter a family and leave behind more than children.
They leave behind a legacy.
They become the roots from which great branches grow.
Nnenna Esther Adeleke’s story is one of those stories.
What a remarkable woman and mother.
