Abia Public School Students Crowned Champions at 2026 Intl Debate Contest
Students from public schools in Abia State have brought international recognition to Nigeria after emerging overall champions at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Representing Nigeria, the team competed against students from several countries, including Qatar, India, Jordan, the Philippines and Kenya, before advancing through the preliminary stages to the finals.
The students won the Best International School Debate Team award, alongside the Overall Best Team – Junior Category, Best Leadership Award and Best Debater Award, as well as 12 other laurels.
The five-member team comprised Christian Chinweotitom Esther, Chikodi Maureen, Akamnonu Franklin, Ifeanyichukwu Prisca and Simon Divine.
The competition, coordinated by the Vocara Institute and hosted by the QatarDebate Centre at Georgetown University, brought together more than 84 groups from eight countries.
Abia State officials described the achievement as a significant milestone for the state’s public education system. The Commissioner for Basic Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, said the result was an indication that ongoing efforts to improve education were producing positive outcomes.
The state government said plans were underway to welcome and celebrate the victorious students, alongside other Abia students who have excelled in national and international competitions.
