Thirty deaths in Ondo have turned a local herbal-drink scare into a statewide crackdown on unverified alcohol and other substances.
The victims reportedly fell ill after consuming a herbal liquid in Odigbo and Araromi-Obu, but authorities say laboratory tests are still needed to establish the exact cause. The state has now banned unverified products while investigations continue.
For Nigerians, the warning is uncomfortable: something sold casually as a drink can become a public-health emergency overnight.
