Political Ties Shield the Corrupt in Nigeria, Warns Emir Sanusi
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has criticized the selective enforcement of Nigeria’s anti-corruption laws, warning that progress remains impossible without independent institutions.
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, the former Central Bank Governor observed that corruption charges are routinely dropped for individuals with the right political affiliations. He noted that the judiciary and anti-graft agencies are frequently manipulated, raising doubts about whether prosecutions are driven by genuine accountability or political victimhood.
Sanusi stressed that updating legislation is meaningless if political leaders and the judiciary fail to uphold the law impartially, concluding that under the current system, political connections guarantee immunity from justice.
