36-Year-Old Russian Chess Official Dies of Malaria After Reportedly Contracting It During Nigeria Trip
A 36-year-old Russian chess official, Sergei Indeikin, has reportedly died after developing severe malaria following a work trip to Nigeria.
Indeikin, an operational manager and delegate for the International Chess Federation (FIDE), travelled to Abuja for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held from August 1 to 8.
FIDE confirmed his death on August 23, describing it as a “sudden illness” without stating the cause. However, Russian media reports citing his parents and medical sources linked his death to severe malaria allegedly contracted in Nigeria.
He reportedly became ill after leaving Abuja and later returned to Russia, where his condition rapidly worsened. He was admitted to a hospital in Perm but doctors could not save him. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
