President Trump signs Executive order designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations
WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump signed Executive Order 14157, initiating the process to formally designate major international drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
The executive directive instructs the State Department, Department of Justice, and Department of Homeland Security to systematically classify major transnational syndicates—such as the Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Tren de Aragua, and MS-13—under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) and the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
